LEAVE OF ABSENCE POLICY

 

The circulars outlining terms and conditions of Leave of Absence are available on the Department of Education website www.education.ie and on the INTO website www.into.ie .

 

Teachers
Eligible teachers may apply to the Board of Management(BoM) for the following types of Leave of Absence:  Brief Absences, Extra Personal Vacation, Maternity Leave, Adoptive Leave, Paternity Leave, Parental Leave, Carer’s Leave, Career Break, Job-Sharing, Force Majeure Leave, Study Leave, Exam Leave/Study Leave, Secondment and Teacher Exchange.

 

Special Needs Assistants
Eligible SNAs may apply to the Board of Management for the following types of Leave of Absence:  Maternity Leave, Adoptive Leave, Paternity Leave, Parental Leave, Carer’s Leave, and Brief Absences   (Circular: Pay SNA 18//04)

 

Secretary/Caretaker
Eligible School Secretaries/Caretakers may apply to the Board of Management for the following types of Leave of Absence:  Maternity Leave, Adoptive Leave, Paternity Leave, Parental Leave, Carer’s Leave, Force Majeure Leave and Brief Absences.

 

 

Applications and Approval

Applications for leave that require the approval of the BoM will be considered on receipt of appropriate documentation in accordance with the following criteria:

 

Number of employees on leave or seeking leave and availability of suitably qualified replacements as the welfare and educational needs of the pupils will take precedence.
Members of staff applying for leave must:

Apply in writing in time to the Chairperson where applicable.
Comply with terms laid down by the DES, BoM and relevant legislation.
Applicants may be asked to attend a BoM meeting to further inform the Board.
The Board of Management will:

Process each application for leave as quickly as possible and comply with the terms of reference laid down by the DES, relevant BoM policy and the law.
Inform the applicant of the it’s decision within one week of the decision being made.
Respect the confidentiality of all applicants’ requests for leave.
Ratified by Board of Management on 25th March, 2009.
